Supervisor Summit 2025 Schedule & Breakout Descriptions

Check-in will begin at 12:30 PM in the Carver Lobby area. Enjoy some snacks while mingling with fellow attendees. We have planned a optional networking activity to foster meaningful connections and collaboration among other supervisors.

 

Keynote: “Gen Z: Post Pandemic – Understanding and Engaging the Next Generation”

Presented by: Erica J. Fischer, Director of Enrollment Marketing

Location: Carver 101

Erica will cover who Gen Z is and the unique characteristics they embody. With a focus on recruitment, she will share strategies for effectively communicating and working with Gen Z student employees.

Breakout 1 A – First Steps, Lasting Impact: Time-Tested Approaches to Training & Onboarding 

Presented by: OSFA Student Employment Center & University Human Resources

This session will clarify the difference between onboarding and training, and why both are essential for student employee success. We’ll also cover key student employment policies supervisors need to know to ensure compliance and create a positive work experience.

Breakout 1 B – Don’t Set Yourself on Fire to Keep Others Warm: Self Compassion and Mindfulness for Everyone 

Presented by: ISU Health & Wellness

Understand the impact of burnout, learn strategies for coping with burnout, become aware of resources you can access for individual support and identify strategies for creating a culture of wellness and self-care in your life.

Breakout 1 C – Effective Communication Strategies  

Presented by: Lauren Schalinske, Divisional Communications Lead – Division of Operation and Finance (2025 Student Employee Supervisor of the Year)

This interactive session will explore key supervisor-student employee touchpoints—Interview, Onboarding, Regular Reviews, and Exit Interviews—and how to enhance communication at each stage.

Breakout 2 A – Modern Tools, Classic Training: Evolving Student Learning with Workday Learn

Breakout 1 C – Verbal Judo

Effective communication is more important than ever. This session introduces Verbal Judo, a technique developed by Dr. George J. Thompson that uses empathy, respect, and strategy to handle difficult conversations. You’ll gain practical tools to defuse tension, manage conflict, and improve your communication skills.

Join us for an round table discussion, where we will exchange valuable insights and strategies for student employment supervision. The idea of this is for participants to collaborate and learn from each other’s experiences and tips.
